Backing Up Your Email in Outlook Express
Step 1: Open up Outlook Express. Go to File, Folder, Compact All Folders
Step 2: Wait while the folders compact (you will see a little window like this)
Step 3: Your folders will have been saved as a file with the extension ".dbx". To find them, go to the Start Menu, Search, For Files and Folders
Step 4: In the Search box (circled below) type "*.dbx". The star symbol is a wildcard - it means look for anything with the extension .dbx
Step 5: You may get a lot of files that come up. You don't need to back up all of them. To see which files are the ones that you just compacted, go over to the right to check the date modified field. (To move to the right, click on the bar at the bottom - see the circle - and drag it to the left.) To sort the files by date, click on the "Modified" bar
Step 6: See which files have been modified today. See what folder they are in. In Windows 2000, this will be something like C:\Documents and Settings\(your username)\ Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\(some ridiculously long number)\Microsoft\Outlook Express. In Windows 98, it will be something like C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\(some ridiculously long number)\Microsoft\Outlook Express. All the files you modified today should be in the same folder with the same ridiculously long number in the folder path. Remember that ridiculously long number
Step 7: Go to Windows Explorer, and find your files by following the folder path. For instance, in Windows 98, go to the C drive, open the Windows folder, open the Application Data folder, open the Identities folder, and open the folder that is named by that ridiculously long number you remember. Open the folder Microsoft. Copy the folder called Outlook Express. Copy the folder by right-clicking on it, and choosing "Copy" from the menu that pops up
Step 8: Paste the folder to your zip disk (or floppy disk, or terra account, or wherever you choose to back up your files.) Paste by right-clicking on the folder or disk where you want to paste your folder, and choosing "Paste" from the menu that pops up
